  • Welcome to ML 225, which is an overview of Russian culture, from its beginnings to the beginning of the twentieth century. The subject is approached with a focus on historical turning points but also with discussions of the influences of geography, religion, social structure and the interactions Russian culture has had with other cultures.  Readings from modern authors with discussions led by a Russian professor provide maximum insight into modern views on Russian culture.

ML 225 class and all of the readings are in English. No knowledge of Russian is needed.

If you have had some Russian, you are strongly encouraged to read in the original. Russian Studies majors and minors or students who might want to do a major or minor and have had some Russian MUST read in the original, according to the level you are at in the language (see me for details). These readings are the originals of what we are reading in class, so you will be able to read them along with the English translation. Feedback on these readings can be given in class or to me.

We will be watching several films and film excerpts, and listening to Russian music.
