Belonging–the feeling that those around you accept your authentic self–is a basic need. People will do a lot to find it (in both healthy and unhealthy ways), and no matter how successful someone can be at DePauw, if they don’t feel they belong here they won’t reach their true potential. During this course we’ll evaluate the science behind belonging, authenticity, and emotion; understand the ways that communities are built and grow; and create strategies to build our own belonging and provide it for others at DePauw. This course will include a variety of opportunities to reflect on your own identity, community, and belonging, and give you the tools and strategies to help others belong at DePauw, both by creating intentional belonging-focused programs, and by identifying systems, structures, and places that hinder belonging. |
